Body Scrub for Men

An exfoliating body scrub is the most underused product in most men's bathrooms and the one that makes the fastest visible difference. Here is how to use it properly.

What a body scrub actually does

A body scrub lifts away the layer of dead surface cells that builds up and makes skin look dull, feel rough and absorb moisturiser poorly. Remove that layer and everything you apply afterwards works better.

It also helps with two problems men raise constantly: the rough patches on the backs of arms and thighs, and ingrown hairs after shaving or clipping. Both are caused by dead skin trapping hair beneath the surface.

How often should you use one?

Once or twice a week for most skin. Three times if your skin is oily or you train hard and shower daily. Once a week or less if your skin is dry, sensitive or reacts easily.

Daily scrubbing is the most common mistake. It strips the skin barrier, which leaves skin drier and more irritated than it was before you started — the opposite of what you were trying to achieve.

Where it matters and where it does not

Focus on the areas that actually need it: back, shoulders, chest, upper arms, elbows, knees and feet. These are where dead skin accumulates and where roughness shows.

Go lighter on the neck and anywhere you shave. Do not use a coarse body scrub on your face — facial skin is thinner and needs a finer product or a professional treatment like our padding scrub facial.

How to use it

Use it on wet skin in the shower after you have been under the water a few minutes so the skin has softened. Work in small circles with light pressure — the grains do the work, not your hands.

Rinse thoroughly and follow with body butter, body oil or moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Exfoliating without moisturising afterwards is half a routine.

Scrub before a shave or a fade

Exfoliating the night before you shave lifts trapped hairs and gives a closer, less irritated result. The same applies to body grooming and to the back of the neck before a fade.

If you get persistent ingrown hairs, a weekly scrub in that area will do more than any aftershave balm.
