Sankofa Underwear

The Sankofa Freedom Pants: loose, baggy-boxer-style underwear with a gold Sankofa side print and a gold embroidered waistband. Designed by Hector's, a Black-owned brand in Mortlake, London.

What the Sankofa Freedom Pants are

The Sankofa Freedom Pants are our take on the baggy boxer: loose, airy underwear with a wrap-style front, made for men who like freedom and ventilation without losing the feeling of being held in place.

They are underwear first, comfortable under trousers all day. They also work on their own for summer lounging, or layered over a jock or swim trunks at the beach or poolside.

The details

A gold embroidered elastic waistband carries the Hector's and Adinkra logo, and a gold Sankofa symbol is printed on the side.

The fabric is breathable cotton with elastane for stretch, and one style also uses satin. Every pair is Hector's own design, with the Ghanaian influence that runs through our Adinkra range.

What Sankofa means

Sankofa is an Adinkra symbol from the Akan people of Ghana, usually translated as "go back and fetch it": learn from the past to build the future, or simply, go back to your roots. It is often drawn as a bird looking backwards, or as a stylised heart. Read our story on what Sankofa means for the full history.

Fit and sizing

The Sankofa Freedom Pants are cut loose, the opposite of our snug-fit pouch boxers. Choose your usual size; there is no need to size up for comfort.

They come in S to XL and in waist sizes from 28 to 38 inches, depending on the style. Our underwear size guide has the full size chart.

Sankofa boxers as a gift

Underwear with a meaning behind it makes a more personal gift than a generic high-street pack. The Sankofa Freedom Pants are popular for birthdays, Father's Day and Black History Month in October. Pair them with our Adinkra boxers or a grooming gift for a complete present.
