Where can I get afro hair done in London?
5 min read
Quick answer
Afro hair services cluster in south and east London around Brixton, Peckham, Croydon and Tottenham, and in west London around Shepherd's Bush. Specialist colour and extension work on textured hair is thinner on the ground everywhere, which is why clients travel for it. Hector's is in Mortlake SW14, serving all of London.
I've just moved to London. Where do people actually go for afro hair here?
Geographically it clusters. South and east London have the deepest concentration — Brixton, Peckham, Croydon, Tottenham and around Dalston all have long-established afro hair communities and plenty of choice. West London centres more on Shepherd's Bush and Harlesden. Central London has fewer dedicated afro salons than people expect.
So should I just go to whichever is nearest?
For braiding and protective styling, often yes — that skill is well distributed and you will find good braiders in all of those areas. Where it changes is colour and extensions on textured hair. Bleaching afro hair safely, or fitting extensions on 4a to 4c without traction damage, is a narrower skill set and it is not evenly spread across the city. That is the work people travel for.
Where does that leave south west London? There doesn't seem to be much.
You are right that there is less of it, and that is precisely why we are busy. We are at 73 Lower Richmond Road Mortlake SW14 and we take afro and mixed-texture work as core business rather than as an occasional booking. For clients in Richmond, Putney, Barnes, Kew, Chiswick, Fulham, Hammersmith and Wandsworth we are usually the closest specialist option.
I'm north of the river though. How would I even get to you?
District line to Richmond then a few minutes on. South Western trains from Waterloo or Clapham Junction stop at Mortlake station, a short walk from the door. The 419 runs from Hammersmith. By car the A316 and Chiswick Bridge bring you in from the north and west with parking nearby. From central London it is around 40 minutes.
What can I get done in one visit?
That is the practical advantage of coming to one place. Braids, extensions, colour and cutting all happen under one roof by a team who know your hair history, so you are not carrying advice between salons. If you are travelling a distance, tell us at booking and we will stack services into a single visit rather than making you come twice.
