Taper Mullet

The taper mullet is the mullet most men actually ask for by name: mullet length at the back with sides that shorten gradually and no hard fade line. This is the parent guide to every taper mullet height we cut.

What is a taper mullet?

A taper mullet keeps mullet length and texture at the back while the sides shorten gradually towards the ear and neckline. The defining feature is that the change in length is progressive. There is no line where one length stops and another starts, which is what separates a taper from a fade.

Because the transition is gradual, a modern taper mullet never looks freshly clippered and never develops the hard regrowth line that a fade does. That single property is why it has become the default request in our chairs rather than the bolder fade mullet.

Taper mullet vs fade mullet

A fade mullet removes weight across the whole lower side and blends towards skin or stubble, creating deliberate contrast against the length at the back. It looks sharp on the day and needs a tidy roughly every two weeks to stay that way.

A taper mullet only shortens the hair progressively around the perimeter, so the sides keep their body. It reads softer, suits more workplaces, and stretches six weeks or more between visits. If you want the mullet to be the first thing people notice, choose the fade. If you want it to look like your hair rather than like a haircut, choose the taper.

Choosing your taper height

Taper height is the main decision once you have chosen a taper over a fade, and it is where most of the variation in this style lives.

A low taper only touches the perimeter around the ear and nape. It is the softest and lowest maintenance version, and it is what we recommend for fine hair, curly hair and anyone growing their hair out — we have a full low taper mullet guide covering it.

A mid taper starts the shortening a little higher up the side, giving more visible shape without a fade line. It suits thicker hair that gets heavy above the ear.

A high taper carries the gradual shortening further up towards the temple. It is the closest a taper gets to fade-level contrast while keeping the soft transition, and it needs tidying closer to every three or four weeks.

Who suits a taper mullet?

Fine hair suits it because nothing is removed from the body of the sides. Thick hair suits it because the taper can be pushed higher to control weight. Curly and afro-textured hair suits it particularly well because the taper controls the flare above the ear without cutting into the curl pattern.

It also works for men in workplaces where a skin fade mullet would be too much, and for anyone who cannot get to a barber every fortnight. Face shape is rarely the limiting factor — taper height is what we adjust to balance proportions.

How we cut a taper mullet at Hector's

We set the back length and the mullet corner first, then work the taper underneath it so the two shapes agree. Depending on your hair type the taper is cut by hand with scissors, with clipper over comb, or a combination of both. The neckline is finished soft rather than blocked so it grows out naturally.

We finish by drying the back away from the head with your own product, so you leave knowing how to recreate the shape. Book at 73 Lower Richmond Road Mortlake SW14 — clients come to us for taper mullets from Richmond, East Sheen, Barnes, Putney, Chiswick, Kew and across London.

Taper mullet questions

Is a taper mullet the same as a modern taper mullet? Yes. Both describe the same cut — mullet length with gradually shortened sides and no fade line.

How often does it need cutting? Every six to eight weeks for a low taper, closer to three or four weeks for a high taper.

Can I switch from a fade mullet to a taper? Yes, but expect one appointment where we let the sides gain weight before the taper sits correctly.

Which taper height should I pick? Low if you want minimum maintenance, high if you want more visible shape. We will advise at consultation.
